Cornell remains undefeated after Connor Fletcher scored with 14 seconds remaining to stop UAlbany, 17-16, at Schoellkopf Field.
Fletcher moved from right to left, going down the alley before bouncing a shot inside the far pipe to give the Big Red the late lead and send them to victory. For the 10 minutes prior to Fletcher’s score, the Dane Train was rolling.
Albany went on a five-goal run, kicked off by Noah Taylor’s first goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining. The Danes scored four assisted goals in a row, then Jack Burgmaster’s tally with 1:13 remaining gave Albany hope of knocking off the Big Red.
Austin Jones won 25 of 27 face-offs for Albany. Jakob Patterson had three goals and three assists, Kyle Casey had two goals and two assists, Sean Eccles had three goals, and Ron John had three assists.
Albany (1-2) showcased its ball movement and depth despite Tehoka Nanticoke not in the lineup. An Albany representative said Nanticoke was “not with the team today due to an internal matter.”
Cornell (3-0) had a big game from Jonathan Donville (4, 3). Jeff Teat had one goal and four assists, and Fletcher had two goals and two assists. Cornell remains unbeaten despite playing three strong face-off teams (Hobart, Cornell and Albany).
Albany has a quick turnaround, playing UMass on Tuesday. Cornell plays in the Crown Lacrosse Classic in Charlotte, N.C., playing Penn State and Towson.
